The Indiana State Police investigated a single vehicle crash on Wednesday January 17th, 2018. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of the construction zone just south of the exit for US Highway 231.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Regen Smith revealed that on January 17th, 2018 at approximately 7:14 PM a 2007 black Kia Sorento, being driven by Joseph Naseef, 65, of Chicago, Illinois, was traveling southbound in the left lane of Interstate 65. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to navigate a lane shift in the construction zone and struck the impact attenuator at Interstate 65 near the 245 mile marker. After making contact, the vehicle spun in the roadway and then struck the concrete barrier wall, coming to a rest facing east in the right lane. The crash occurred on a bridge over a drainage ditch where there are currently no shoulders. Due to the debris from the crash and location of the vehicle traffic was unable to pass.
The driver was taken to Franciscan Health Crown Point for treatment of non life threatening injuries. The right lane of Interstate 65 remained closed for over 1 hour, until the vehicle and debris could be removed.
